Your Name: Deborah Andollo Lopez

Nationality: Cuban and French

Age: 34

Accomplishments in freediving: The story began at 11 when I start synchronized swimming. I discover my freediving skills working as model for underwater photography, diving at -40mtrs on the first attempt in constant ballast to everyone’s surprise.

How often do you train? Training is the key of my success. I try to do something every day.

What is a typical day for you in your training routine – without divulging any special techniques that you don’t feel comfortable revealing: It depends where I am. If next to the water I will swim and dive. I like also to walk in mountains, to run, to ride bicycle.

Do you have any special dietary needs or preferences that you feel helps your training? Do you have any recommendations regarding this topic? I like the Mediterranean diet; olive oil, pastas, more fish then meet, fresh vegetables, some cookies, mineral water and a glass of good wine! What’s important is to eat small quantities!

Where do you mainly train – i.e.; pool, open water, etc. I have my base in the Isle of Youth (Isla de la Juventud) where I work the aquatic part in the see and in Havana where I make a physical preparation.

What is your favorite discipline in the sport of freediving? I like all the discipline with a preference for the variable ballast.

What is the most memorable dive or attempt that you have had – positive or negative? My last record where I beat the men’s record in freediving (-73 meters) diving at -74 meters. It was a dream to beat a men’s record.

What advice would you give to someone who might be interested in the sport of freediving? First of all, never dive alone, but with safety and security with experienced people. For fun and pleasure before to try very deep dives. The best is to have freediving courses with a federation (like the IAFD for example.).

What do you do outside of the sport? I like to be with my family (my son, my husband, my friends). I’m also active member in animal protection association, nature protection association (trying to create protected diving zone in Cuba).
