It’s time to put fun into protecting the underwater world, and there has never been a better opportunity to do so! Many of the world’s aquatic environments are rapidly degrading from human pressures. The recently published “Status of the World’s Coral Reefs” paints a bleak picture: 20% of the world’s coral reefs have been destroyed, and 24% are under imminent risk of collapse through human pressures. Dive In To Earth Day offers ocean lovers the chance to actively protect coral reefs and other aquatic environments.
The Coral Reef Alliance (CORAL) coordinates “Dive In To Earth Day” each year to ensure that the 72 percent of the planet covered by water is not forgotten during the annual Earth Day celebrations held every year on April 22nd. People are invited throughout the week to organize and participate in a wide range of activities to help protect underwater ecosystems. Dive In To Earth Day has become a great success over the past six years, generating over 20 percent of all registered Earth Day activities worldwide. Over 200,000 participants from 89 countries and territories around the world have taken part in 1,200 Dive In activities. To date, Dive In participants have removed 200,000 lbs of trash from coastal areas, educated and inspired children to care for water resources, supported coral reef areas and much, much more.
