PADI Announces St. Patricks Day Party in Virtual World "Second Life"

PADI have announced a unique celebration of St Patricks day in the virtual world Second Life.  Second Life is an Internet-based virtual world launched in 2003, developed by Linden Research, Inc which came to international attention via mainstream news media in late 2006 and early 2007. A downloadable client program called the Second Life Viewer enables its users, called “Residents”, to interact with each other through motional avatars, providing an advanced level of a social network service combined with general aspects of a metaverse. Residents can explore, meet other Residents, socialize, participate in individual and group activities, create and trade items (virtual property) and services from one another.

PADI is inviting consumers and diving professionals to celebrate on their very own PADI Island on the Dive World sim.  PADI Island is an experience dedicated to scuba diving, underwater adventure and the aquatic environment. To pick up some of the luck of the Irish (and an excuse to down some Guinness), PADI scheduled the event for St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, 2008. To accommodate the international Second Life community, there will be 3 events at 1 pm, 6 pm and 9 pm Second Life Time (PST).

The event will feature a showing of the original 1930s underwater production of Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. There’ll be dancing all day long too. Attendees can add a free limited edition green PADI T-shirt to their (virtual) inventory.

PADI Island’s the place to get involved with diving – both Second Life and real life. The island features detailed Second Life underwater adventures – wrecks, caves and reefs. Get the latest Second Life dive gear at the PADI Island mall, enjoy the movie and follow the links to padi.com and PADI eLearning to start learning to dive for real. The island’s Project AWARE (Aquatic World Awareness, Responsibility and Education) build supports one of diving’s preeminent environmental organizations, showing you how to contribute to a healthier, vibrant underwater world. Don’t miss the celebration at the Dive World sim – St. Paddy’s at PADI.
