Australian environmentalist and television personality Steve Irwin has died during a diving accident. The 44-year-old’s chest is believed to have been pierced by the stingray barb during the filming of a new TV series. Although deadly, such attacks on humans are a rarity.

Mr Irwin was known for his television show The Crocodile Hunter and his work with native Australian wildlife.
