DeeperBlue.com caught up with Matesuz Malina, who walked away with a new World Record, today:

“I feel great! The dive was ‘kind-of’ expected as I’ve started doing such dives in training in the last month and I knew that if I will have ‘the right day’ I won’t wait until finals to validate them. I’m human after all and sometimes I have a day when I show up in a pool and 200m is harder for me than today’s performance. Today, before the swim, I decided to swim up to 200m and see how I feel there. When I was there I felt totally lucid in my head so I’ve decided to go for Dave Mullins 232m. I was a bit afraid of coming up on the ropes, it’s much harder without wall support, so I did a turn at 225m – push-off, stroke and I had removed my neck-weight before surfacing leaving no possibility of dipping my airways underwater during surface protocol. When I have a day like today I don’t know where my limits are, I always say, limits are in our heads and that’s what I teach at my freediving school, Limitless

Truly epic in both mental & physical approach as well as the dive itself.  The team at DeeperBlue.com congratulate Mateusz on his new World Record.

We mustn’t forget the other amazing performances today, new National Records fell to:

  • Segura Vendrell (Spain) – 175m / 574ft
  • Talihmet Ahmed (Morocco) – 104m / 341ft

Competition Organizer Mikko Anttonen was enthusiastic about the performances and conditions today:

“As with yesterday’s static apnea, we saw amazing dives and very few disqualifications. The Polish athlete Mateusz Malina impressed all with a huge 232m dive breaking the existing world records. In the final ranking the world record was followed with three divers to 200m and the qualification limit to A finals was over 175m in men’s category. In the women’s category the first place was taken by Alice Hickson from UK with a 159m dive and the qualification limit to A finals was over 140 meters.

After the first competition day, the second one was also easier for the organizers.  The athletes were very satisfied with the conditions which shows also in the results list. The moment of the 232m dive was very emotional for all the members of the organizing committee… solid proof the we have managed to provide good conditions for the athletes.”

In a testament to the quality of competition facilities and athletes, there were no less than 27 clean Personal Bests (PB) as part of the results today.

Tomorrow, Wednesday, sees the Dynamic (DYN) qualifiers kick off to see who moves to the DNF Finals.
