AIDA Team Freediving World Championships 2016 – Constant Weight

The first competitive diving day of the AIDA Team Freediving World Championships in Kalamata, Greece started with the Constant Weight (CWT) discipline.

The weather conditions for athletes gave them a little taste of everything from sunshine, rain and thunderstorms.  It didn’t seem to impact the divers to much but those waiting for their dives had to huddle up on the platform in a tremendous show of camaraderie.

The Japanese Ladies Freediving team is showing is muscle with topping the results table with strong dives from Tomoko Fukua (96m), Hanako Hirose (83m) and Misuzu Okamoto (81m).

The Czech men team is topping the leader-board with performances from Petr Vala (80m), Martin Valenta (80m) and Mirosian Sevick (80m with a 5 point penalty).

Surprises from the day included Russia powerhouse Alexey Molchanov who announced the deepest dive of the day (123m) but was disqualified for taking too long with his surfacing protocol.

Two national records fell during today – Jessea Lu (China) with 72m and Jenna Apokotos (Greece) 68m.

Tomorrow is a rest day and an opportunity for the athletes to train in Dynamic (DYN) in the pool.
