A new ecological education program for schools in Portugal, the “Atlantis Program,” has been announced.
The program is based on the idea that:
“Establishing a closer connection to nature has a transformative power.”
The Atlantis program aims to blend education and freediving and ocean literacy, establish a strong ethos of ocean responsibility amongst the participants. The program is based on three pillars:
Oasis Game: a collaborative effort that helps students create a project to be implemented in their own community.
Freediving: introducing students to the marine world through freediving.
Deep Ecology: a concept that runs through the whole program and promotes the idea of interdependence between all the creatures on the planet, including humans.
The first edition of the Atlantis program will take place between March and June in Sesimbra, Portugal. The initial program will feature 21 eighth-graders from the Navegador Rodrigues Soromenho school.
