If you’re gonna get hitched, might as well do it underwater near an iconic dive site, right?
According to the Florida Keys Tourism Board, Kimberly Triolet and Jorge Rodriguez, in scuba gear over a bridal gown and tux, respectively, this week got married next to the Christ of the Deep statue, 25 feet/7.6 meters underwater and about five miles/eight kilometers off Key Largo.
A notary public wearing scuba gear used an underwater slate for the exchange of vows. Witnesses included friends, family and fish.
The wedding helped mark the 50th anniversary of the legendary, nine-foot/2.7-meter-tall underwater statue’s installation.
“To be able to get married at the Christ statue on the 50th anniversary is amazing and we’ll for sure be coming back for our 50th anniversary to dive it again,” Triolet said. A “picture cannot just describe how pretty it is, and it’s something definitely that should be on everybody’s bucket list to see.”
The statue was placed at the site on Aug. 25, 1965, and wound up becoming a symbol for the John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, the United States’ first underwater preserve created in 1960. It’s now part of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary.
