DEMA Show 2012: Teens4Oceans

When was the last time you saw a group of high school students empowered and trusted to place an $80,000 underwater camera and water monitoring system in the ocean?  Teens4Oceans is doing just that.  After starting as a high school club in Boulder Colorado, teens from T4O have deployed 6 of these solar powered units in the waters of Biscayne Bay, Anacapa Island, Dry Tortugas, US Virgin Islands, Grand Cayman and on the Bahia Honda Bridge in the Florida Keys.  Over the next few years, they plan to deploy a total of eleven units in US coastal and Carribean waters, covering each of the major eco-systems of the area.  Not only do T4O students deploy the camera units, but they help to engineer and design the units, and then use the information gathered after deployment for research projects.

Teens4Oceans, a not-for-profit, is dedicated to inspiring youth across the country to take action to help the ocean through education and empowerment.  Currently there are four chapters, but plans are in place to actively expand the program in 2013.  There are three major focuses of T4O: Teens Take Action, which gets T4O members involved in research, outreach events and expeditions; Technology, Research and Conservation, which helps teens develop technology and engineering skills through webcam and buoy projects; and Exploration and Expeditions, offering teens unique opportunities to become true ocean explorers and researchers, no matter where they live.
