Famed National Geographic Underwater Photographer Emory Kristof Passes Away

Emory Kristof, a longtime underwater photographer for National Geographic Magazine, has died at age 80.

Kristof, who died on February 6th, was a staff photographer for the magazine from 1964 to 1994, producing photos for more than 40 articles.

Kristof won the Underwater Society of America’s NOGI Award for Arts in 1987, and in 1986 the Explorers Club awarded him the Loell Thomas Award for Underwater Exploration.

Also in 1986, the American Society of Magazine Publishers bestowed its Innovation in Photography award to Kristof, along with explorer Bob Ballard, for their coverage of the Titanic shipwreck discovery.
