Freediving App Review Series: STAmina Apnea Trainer (iOS version)

This is part of the DeeperBlue.com Freediving App Review Series – a collection of reviews of Freediving related mobile apps.  Each app has been reviewed based on a standardized set of criteria you can see here.  In this article we review the STAmina Apnea Trainer (iOS version) App.

The newest App we reviewed is the STAmina Apnea Trainer, developed by Valeriy Kovalenko. The App was featured on DeeperBlue.com in June.

In the article Kovalenko was quoted

We are focused on a creation a cross-platform tool that would be essential for apnea trainings. Huge attention is payed to usability and graphic design concepts, to let everyone prepare themselves to static apnea instead of thinking about the tool. A lot of features are implemented, much more is coming.”

STAmina, like all the training Apps reviewed, is essentially an electronic time keeper and table generator. The idea behind using CO2 and O2 Tables for training is to build up the body’s tolerances to increased Carbon Dioxide (CO2) in the blood and diminished Oxygen (O2) levels. STAmina allows the user to configure the tables to correspond to their skill level and it takes you through a set of tables with both visual and audio notifications. There is a tracking feature as well, which gives you a record of your sessions, and you are taken through a workout with visual and voice notifications.

STAmina is a clean, elegant training aid. There are not a lot of frills, but it is intuitive and well designed, with bright, clear graphics. We found very little variation in the tables and the ratios…there seems to be a general consensus as to how to construct a CO2 and O2 Table for Apnea training. In this regard, this App does a fine job and at it’s low price, it’s sure to become a popular training tool for divers.

So, let’s see what we found:

Price: $2 – $6 depending on region.

Functionality: Very intuitive navigation. The table configuration feature is easy to use and the tables are solid training tools.

Relevance/Usefulness: This is a very useful tool for freedivers/spearos who want to improve their breath hold time. Improved hold times equal greater confidence and safety in the water and make diving a lot more enjoyable.

Graphics/Appearance: Sharp, modern, clean. One cannot ask much more from an App than it be uncluttered and easy to navigate and read.

The Apple iPhone version is available on the Mac App Store for devices that run the iOS7 or later operating system. Compatible with iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, this app is optimized for iPhone 5. The STAmina App is FREE and can be downloaded at https://geo.itunes.apple.com/us/app/stamina-apnea-trainer/id994874491?mt=8&uo=6

The app is also available of Android and Windows Phone platforms although this review only covers the iOS version.
