Greenpeace fined for Reef Destruction

Philippines, 01-11-2005

Greenpeace has been fined $15,000 after its flagship, the “Rainbow Warrior II” ran aground at Tubbataha Reef Marine Park.

The ship damaged 160 square metres of reef. Greenpeace campaign manager, Red Constantino claimed that the charts used by the ship indicated the reef was “a mile and a half” away when it ploughed into the coral.

The ship was in the area to promote earth-friendly energy resources when the incident occured.

The ship itself escaped serious damage.
