July 8, 2008, Ft. Lauderdale – Freediving Instructors and Trainers, the training agency founded and directed by Martin Stepanek, has announced a first-of-its-kind training event, the F.I.T GULFSTREAM INVITATIONAL 2008 FREEDIVING COMPETITION COURSE. This course is designed to give freedivers the very best opportunity to gain a complete competition experience (along with AIDA International World Ranking list status!) under the guidance of Mr. Stepanek and his staff.
The competition course will run over 3 days with two additional open water backup days. Students will learn the theoretical and practical essentials of freediving competition and will compete in a full three-discipline competition – Constant Weight, Dynamic and Static.
All student performances will be judged by AIDA International Judges and will, therefore, will be recognized for the AIDA International Ranking, National and World Records (doping test expense covered by the athlete). The last two days of competition will be for the AIDA ranking list only and can be completed in any of the selected depth disciplines – CW, CNF, and FIM.
AIDA International Head Level A Judge Grant Graves will be in attendance, offering an AIDA Level E Judges course throughout the event. The Judges course is open to anyone interested and dis esigned to be compatible with the schedules of student competitors, event volunteers andthe general public. CPR/First Aid training and certification will also be available.
There are no minimum performance standard required for participation in the Competition Course. Event organizer Niki Roderick, a New Zealand National record holder, comments: “We would like to welcome and
encourage the participation of everyone – however, we do have very limited positions open for student competitors. The Competition Course enrollment is limited to eight. This is an exciting opportunity to experience `the real deal’ without the pressure and expense of a full-bore AIDA competition, and with the guidance and coaching of a 10-time World Record freediver.”
