Hammerhead Spearguns introduces their first series of dive knives

-

“Patela”, “Ilium”, “Cranium”, “Ulna”…the names read like an anatomy lesson. In this instance, they are the names of the new line of spearfishing knives that Hammerhead Spearguns is introducing at DEMA 2015.

Kevin Sakuda, founder of Hammerhead Spearguns, explains that “the knives are named after the bone they are designed to be worn closest to.” So the “Ulna” is worn on the arm, the “Ilium” is worn on the hip and the “Patela” on the lower leg, below the knee. Kevin adds that the “Cranium” isn’t a strap-mounted knife, but is where you “stab the fish.”

Manufactured exclusively for Hammerhead Spearguns, the new knives are in keeping with the company motto Na Pono O I’a Hawaii, which loosely translates into the “right stuff” or “right spirit for Hawaii.” Spearos around the world will be able to take advantage of the thousands of hours of design and testing that the blue water spearos of Hawaii have committed to their products.

Creating quality dive knives is an art form and Hammerhead Spearguns has partnered with Mac Coltellerie Srl, an Italian firm that has been making knives since the 1920’s. Their proprietary processes create a very sharp, lightweight and durable knife. Generally speaking, all the blades are constructed from Stainless Steel, with a hardness of 55-56HRC. They are low-profile and designed to be worn close to the body, eliminating “line traps” and minimizing drag.

The “Cranium” is 3,8 mm (0.149”) thick and weighs just 112 g (3.95 oz). At 11 cm (4.33″) in length, it is right-sized for quickly penetrating the skull, while the low profile keeps the knife out of the way until needed.

The Ilium checks in at 140 g (4.13 oz), and a blade length of 10.5 cm (4.13″). The knife sports a blade serrated on one side and a very sleek, low-drag profile.

The “Ulna” is a minimalist blade, designed with the freediver in mind. Slim, strong and lightweight, the “Ulna” checks in at a mere 85 g (2.99 oz) and with a 7 cm (2.75″) blade length, is a serious tool.

The largest knife in the line is the Patela, which incorporates a hardened butt, useful for those times you need a hammer as well as a knife. At 154 g (5.43 oz) and 12 cm (4.72″) in length, this knife is the the most “universal” dive knife in the lineup.

Kevin Sakuda, and the entire gang at Hammerhead Spearguns looks forward to seeing you in Orlando, Florida for DEMA 2015 at Booth 1453. Look for the new line of knives to be available on their website before the holidays…and keep these knives in mind for that holiday gift to your favorite diver!

A hui hou kakou!
