South Korea’s female freedivers who harvest seafood are on the fast track to be listed as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
According to a report in the Chosun Ilbo, the Korean government’s Cultural Heritage Administration announced last week that a key subcommittee within UNESCO had approved the designation, with a final decision due between November 26 and December 2 at a meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in Ethiopia.
The Haenyos were one of 37 applications from countries around the world submitted for consideration, with the subcommittee approving 18, according to the Chosun Ilbo.
