Miguel Lozano Reflects on a World Record Attempt

Yesterday, in Tulamben, Bali, world renowned freediver Miguel Lozano attempted to set a new world record in the freediving discipline of Free Immersion (FIM). Unfortunately the enormous record eluded the Spanish champion, but perhaps Miguel gained even more through the process.

In an eloquent open letter to his friends, fans and followers Miguel shared some of his perspective, with a promise of more to come. Read Miguel’s thoughtful reflections here below taken from his Facebook post:

“Today I tried to attempt a World Record in Free Immersion. I dived to -123 meters in a 4 minutes and 40 seconds dive time. Unfortunately I had a black out, invalidating the Record.

I’ve spent the last two months training in Bali with Apnea Bali in a very good progression, diving below 120 meters very comfortably. 3 days ago I got stomach sickness therefore we had to cancel yesterday´s attempt. Today I decided to try, but I paid the weakness of the last days.

I’m fine, I just need a few days to recover physically and mentally.

Now I know why this record has stood for the last 6 years, World Records are never easy, neither physically nor technically, but above all, psychologically.
Especially in Free Immersion where you have a mix of all depth disciplines. Very long dive times, strong narcosis due to long time at depth, chest flexibility, mental control to dive deep without fins, physically fit…

All my respect to those who train to improve this record and overcome every day in such a beautiful but demanding sport.

All this would not have been possible without many people.

Thanks to Santiago Jakas for being a loyal, empathetic and positive friend. Of course this is already part of our history, It would have been impossible without you and the support of Apnea Canarias Tenerife.

Julia Mouce Dominguez, Elianne Dipp, Jon Ruiz De Argandona and the team of Apnea Bali, incredible professionalism, willingness and love. Thanks to them I have been able to train for two months under the best conditions. Stable platform, sonar, counterweight and safety freedivers at my disposal. Few people know how the currents are in Bali (Tulamben) and when is the right time to go to sea. No matter who you are, for Julia are two pillars: security and friendship.

Anna Taverna who has learned to suffer in silence and give me only positive reinforcement, to my family and my friends how tell me that for them I’m already a world champion before and after the dive.

To Pepe Arcos for believing in me and travel the world to tell my story #pressure. It will be a different movie, with a closer view. My fears, my joys, insecurities before a deep dive, regardless of not having achieved the record I am convinced that you will like what is revealed.

To all the friends who have come to Bali to support me and be part of the organization, and of course the people who follow me in the distance, I have received your support and love, even though I’ve been off the past few weeks to try to stay focused . Thank you so much.

Aqua Lung España and omersub, two brands carrying the soul of the people who love the sea.

In the coming days I will post everything I didn’t in the past few weeks, you will see graphs of depth, progression graph, depth videos, anecdotes, etc.

Next, more and better. And deeper??”
