Multiyear Study Launched Into North Carolina Wrecks

-

The coast off the U.S. state of North Carolina has had many nicknames over the years, with “Graveyard of the Atlantic” and “Torpedo Alley” being just a few that highlight the number of ships that have sunk over the years.

With so many wrecks lying off the coast, a multiyear study of the sunken maritime heritage has been announced.

The study is a partnership between divers from the National Centers for Coastal Ocean Science (NCCOS) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Monitor National Marine Sanctuary (MNMS), as well as the NOAA ship Nancy Foster.

The objective of the study is to characterize and determine the biological status of the wrecks and rocky reefs, around areas that are proposed to be in the expanded Monitor National Marine Sanctuary.

This year the study will include the wrecks USS Schurz, the Ashkhabad, WE Hutton, U-352, and HMS Bedforshire.

You can find out more here or check out a video of the U-352 below.
