Researchers from Massey University in New Zealand made a surprising discovery when they placed a camera attached to a bait container in the ocean.
Expecting to find the usual suspects of marine life making inquisitive visits to the bait container, they were shocked to see a great white shark turn up and proceed to take the whole rig on a wild ride.
Great whites are very rare in the waters off Rangitahua, or Kermadec island, where the footage was taken. The shark is estimated to be at least 9ft/2.7m long and made several inquisitive passes before deciding to grab hold of the bait can.
Scientists took encouragement from the video since great white sharks are considered a rarity in the location, so the video provides some proof of the existence of a shark population.
