New CMAS World Record For Freediving Under Ice

Croatia’s Valentina Cafolla, 19, set a new CMAS World Record for distance on Sunday 12th March 2017 with a horizontal dive of 125m / 410ft beneath a sheet of ice, up to 70 centimeters thick, on the Lago Di Anterselva Lake in the Italian Alps – beating the previous CMAS world record held by Turkey’s Denya Can.

Cafolla managed to accomplish the dive on the second attempt after aborting her first dive.  The dive was completed in 1min 27sec.

The 19-year old had this to say:

“I didn’t get the perfect breath before the start and started to panic a bit so I had to abort it after 75 meters, I’m really happy that all the intensive preparation paid off, I’m also happy that I’ll be able to dive into warmer water next time.”

Just the day before Cafolla’s record-breaking dive, Frenchman Arthur Guerin-Boeri set a new men’s CMAS world record in freediving under ice at the Sonnanen See in Finland—an astonishing 175 meters (575 feet).
