Parks Canada Exploration Of HMS Erebus Resumes

-

Parks Canada has resumed its research into the wreck of the HMS Erebus, in partnership with the Inuit in Gjoa Haven.

The exploration seeks to build on our understanding of the conditions and environment surrounding the 1845 Franklin Expedition.

Activities completed in 2022 include a return by ROV to the wreck site and diving the site in April and May. Parks Canada’s underwater archaeologists conducted the work in collaboration with the Nattilik Heritage Society’s Inuit Guardians from Gjoa Haven. The teams worked on the sites of HMS Erebus and HMS Terror.

In September 2022, more work was carried out at the HMS Erebus site, where more than 275 artifacts were recovered from the wreck. During the expedition, the team also excavated multiple cabins locations in the wreck. The September expedition took 11 days, during which the team completed 56 dives.
