Public Safety Diving Workshop At DEMA 2003

On October 7, 2003, one day before the start of DEMA Show 2003, DEMA in conjunction with Lifeguard Systems, Inc., an international rescue and recovery training company, will offer a pre-show workshop called Lifeguard Systems Public Safety Diving. The workshop will be held at the Miami Beach Convention Center from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The DEMA Show 2003 will be held October 8 through 11 at the Convention Center. Designed especially for public safety divers, tenders, SOP writers and trainers, this intensive one-day workshop will prepare divers to recognize and prevent potentially fatal situations.

Combining lectures and hands-on demonstrations involving different pieces of professional rescue equipment, the workshop will address a number of key issues of public safety rescue diving facing dive teams and trainers from the latest equipment, standards and procedures to the need for a proven and practiced system of communication and procedures, and training team members to profile a site, conduct witness interviewing, information recording and trifexing, and handle drowning victims.

The workshop will be led by two of the most respected experts in the field of public safety diving, Walt "Butch" Hendrick and Andrea Zaferes of Lifeguard Systems, Inc. Dedicated to diving safety and rescue/recovery, Butch Hendrick has been training public safety dive teams and rescue personnel for more than 35 years. One of the "fathers" of diver safety education, he has developed many of the procedures used and taught today such as the rescue do-si-do and in-water mouth to mouth for scuba accidents as well as surface rescue and diving rescue and recovery programs. President and Founder of Lifeguard Systems, Inc., and RIPTIDE, Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to drowning prevention, drowning victim recovery and homicidal drowning investigation, Butch is an American Canadian Underwater Certifications Master and NAUI course director; DAN Oxygen Provider; NASAR Water Rescue; American Red Cross Basic Life-support Instructor and a New York State EMT.

One of the leading experts in the water rescue and recovery industry today, Andrea Zaferes teaches over 1,000 police, fire, EMS, and sport diver personnel worldwide annually, in everything from underwater vehicle extrication, instructor-level rescue, field neurological evaluations, to blackwater searching. Vice President of Lifeguard Systems and RIPTIDE, Andrea is a NAUI & ACUC course director; Red Cross, PADI, and DAN instructor; NYS EMT; Women’s Diving Hall of Fame Inductee and well published author. The cost to attend the Workshop is $150 per person for DEMA members and $175 for non-members before September 19, 2003. After this date the registration fee is $175 for DEMA members and $200 for non-members.
