Manta rays, with 22-foot wingspans, are the world????????s largest and most majestic winged creatures. They hold no threat to humans but are killed throughout much of their range.
Although there is no industrial manta fishery, they are caught incidentally on long-lines, in near-shores set nets and in tuna purse seines. They are targeted in artisan fisheries in Mexico, the Philippines and Indonesia. The high price that manta dried gill rakers bring in Asian medicinal markets has resulted in a dramatically increased catch and threat. Manta rays are classified as threatened and are in decline. The scarcity of manta research hampers effective conservation management. For more information go to www.Save-the-Mantas.org
