Researchers have developed a possible system to help ships avoid striking sperm whales in the Eastern Mediterranean, according to a study published in Frontiers in Marine Science.
Scientists developed, deployed and operated a “deep-water acoustic observatory for real-time detection and localization of vocalizing sperm whales” over two 3-month periods in the summers of 2020 and 2021 off southwestern Crete, the study’s authors state.
The observatory has been dubbed the System for the Avoidance of Ship-Strikes with Endangered Whales (SAvEWhales).
