Second Underwater Museum Of Art Installation To Open In 2019

-

The second installation of the Underwater Museum of Art is scheduled to open in the summer of 2019.

The museum is the product of a partnership between the Cultural Arts Alliance of Walton County and the South Walton Artificial Reef Association. It’s located seven miles/11 km off Grayton Beach State Park in Northwest Florida, and lies at a depth of around 18m/60ft.

The museum is aimed at rejuvenating and attracting tourists to the waters off Walton County. The current location is barren and consists of 95% sand flats. By deploying statues and sculptures, the installations act as artificial reefs and a protective habitat that provides a space for marine life to flourish in the barren underwater landscape. The museum also gives scientists the opportunity to study the development of artificial reef ecosystems, as well as the impact of the installation on the Gulf ecosystem.

Artists with a history of collaboration and success in large-scale projects are invited to submit application proposals. Nine artists will be selected and given a US$5,500 (~4834 Euros) grant to produce a piece for the museum. The grant will cover all elements of the project, including transportation.
