200m was not even good enough for second place during the Sofia Freediving Cup – an AIDA pool competition held in Bulgaria between 8-9 April. Overall 35 athletes from 6 countries took part in Sofia Freediving Cup 2017 – the 6th AIDA pool competition in Bulgaria.
The competition featured Dynamic (DYN), Dynamic No Fins (DNF) and Static (STA) disciplines for athletes.
The current world champion and world record holder in the DNF discipline – Matt Malina of Poland won with 215m, followed by Giannis Kothonidis who set a new Greek national record with a strong dive of 201 m. Local Bulgarian Danail Edrev was tired after his national record of 207m DYN and managed third place with a dive of ‘only’ 159 m.
Matt Malina took the men’s gold medal in STA with 8min 03sec and with the combined score of DNF and STA won overall gold in the competition. Birgul Erken from Turkey also won gold in the women’s category with 150m DYN and 4min 16sec STA.
