Several members of the USA Spearfishing Team were in attendance at the Blue Wild Ocean Adventure Expo in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, sharing stories of past competitions and previewing the upcoming World Championships in Sagres, Portugal next September.
Team USA consists of Paul Young, Kelston McGuire, Ryan Myers, and Justin Lee, with Joe Fernandez serving as captain and Chuck Hartz serving as a delegate.
During the Expo, Myers gave a talk where he gave tips about how to be a better hunter. He talked about how every spot he’s ever dived has taught him something different.
For instance, when Myers went to Greece for the last World Championship about a year and a half ago, he really considered himself a deep diver, a notion which he was disabused of when he got to Europe.
“You get over there and 130 feet is pretty much where they start. Over there we were diving anywhere from 150 to 200 feet and shooting very small fish.”
He also gave a preview of what the upcoming World Championship in Portugal would be like.
“The diving over there is gonna be quick, it’s gonna be small fish, it’s gonna be shore break, and I’ll be there from anywhere probably six to eight weeks of training, of real scouting to learn how to hunt there.”
