The Great Bahamas Shark Shootout

"Dive photographers who have always wanted to learn how to capture sharks on film will have an excellent opportunity to learn from the best during the Shark Shoot-out event scheduled at Stuart Cove’s Dive Bahamas in Nassau later this fall. During the seven night program (Sept. 21-28, 2002) novice and experienced photographers will have the chance to compete head to head and tooth to tooth as they enter the water on Stuart Cove??s world famous Shark Adventure?? to participate in a Shark Shootout. For six straight days photographers will be participating in a Shark Adventure?? dive on a boat exclusively with other photographers. Each boat will be hosted by ??All Star?? photo pros and timed to offer the best lighting of the day. Together with an ??All Star?? photo pro and Shark Wrangler from Stuart Cove??s divers will work as a team to choreograph and capture the best possible underwater shots.

The remainder of the day will be filled with a technical seminar presented by Shootout pros with tips and tricks to help participants improve their shots. In the evenings each of the photo professionals will strut their stuff when they present a visual collection of their work including some of their personal favorite images.

Stuart Cove??s Fin Photo staff will be offering E-6 processing on site, which leads to one of the most beneficial aspects of the event ?? personal coaching. The ??All Star?? photo pros will help critique your work so that over the six days of diving your images will only get better and better.

Stuart Cove??s Dive Bahamas and Skin Diver Magazine have brought together the world??s leading professional underwater photographers for this event. The first ??All Star?? to sign up was Marty Snyderman, a field editor with Skin Diver and author of the monthly underwater photography column ??Ask The Pro??. With 25 years of professional underwater photography and teaching experience and an Emmy Award to his credit, Marty is known both for his still work and film work. His film ??To Be With Sharks?? was one of the highest rated premiers on Shark Week when it premiered in 1994. Bob Talbot??s work is instantly recognizable when you visit an art gallery and see a shot of whales. The Shark Shootout will be Bob??s 2nd visit to Stuart Cove??s. In 2000 he spent 3 months with Stuart and his team shooting the soon to be released Imax film ??Ocean Men??. Greg Johnston may be the most experienced ??All Star?? in regards to shooting the sharks at Stuart Cove??s. Awarded the Society of American Travel Writers 2000 Travel Photographer of the Year, Greg has covered Stuart Cove??s and the resort’s Caribbean Reef Shark population for the past 15 years as a writer for Skin Diver and is the creative force behind Stuart Cove??s and many other resorts advertising and brochures. Hawaii based David Fleetham was the 1997 British Gas Wildlife Photographer of the Year and the 2000 winner of the Kodak Oceans contest in New Zealand. David is a regular contributor to Skin Diver magazine and can be found on assignment all over the world. As a new writing/photography team at Skin Diver Jay Irland and Georginne Bradley round out our ??All Stars??. They just completed their first assignment at Stuart Cove??s, however; their worldwide experience runs much deeper.

Novice and experienced photographers alike are invited. Sea & Sea is joining with the Fin Photo team to make sure that everyone who wants to will have a camera to shoot on his or her dives. According to ??All Star?? Greg Johnston ??in a setting like this ?? so much of the shooting is being in the right spot at the right time ?? a beginner has the same chance of getting that prize winning shot as I do??.

Of course, all the hard work during the week does has a payoff. Part of the program is a ??shootout?? photo competition. All participants will be asked to submit their best work of the week. The ??All Stars?? panel will then judge those images with prizes awarded at our ending awards ceremony. More than prizes though, winners will be thrust into the limelight as their images appear in the pages of Skin Diver magazine.

Your home for this event will be the South Ocean Golf & Beach Resort,

conveniently located next door to Stuart Cove??s. Packages start at $1,215. For reservations or more details contact Stuart Cove??s at 888-31-SHARK (888-317-4275) or visit the website at
