After a quiet period it seems that James Cameron, the director of the blockbuster movie "Titanic", is looking to resume work on the Audrey Mestre and Pipin Ferraras film adaption of "The Dive".
It seems Cameron is going to film the movie in 3D, which has been road tested on his IMAX films "Ghosts of the Abyss" and "Aliens of the Deep".
Audrey Mestre died in October 2002 whilst trying to set a new World Record in "No-Limits" FreeDiving. Controversy surrounded the fatal dive and many FreeDivers publicly and privately questioned the safety on the event.
Cameron has been mulling "The Dive" since a Sports Illustrated cover story by Gary Smith told the story of the divers. Cameron’s production company Lightstorm bought rights to that article, "The Deadly Dive," as well as rights to a subsequent book by Smith and an autobiography by Ferraras.
Cameron used his submersible equipment to film Ferraras when he matched the depth of her fatal dive in Cabo San Lucas, where the couple first met. It is likely that Cameron will use that actual footage in the film, much as he used footage from his own exploration of the Titanic wreck.
