Sharktopus (2010)

To kick off our top 10 list, we have to begin with Sharktopus. This film shows what might happen if the Military were to create a creature that is half Octopus and half Shark. In Mexico, it becomes apparent that this Sharktopus is out for human blood, a team is created to sought out this creature and remove it from the face of the earth. The scientists who created this beast are the first to join the team. A great action film for those looking for something a little different.

Dark Tide (2012)

This movie is another great, not only because you get to see Halle Berry in a skin tight wetsuit, but also because it has a brilliant story-line. A professional diving instructor blighted by a devastating and near fatal encounter with a Great White Shark, has to make ends meet to save her business and her livelihood. Known as the ‘Shark-whisperer’ Berry’s character makes a lucrative decision to lead a thrill seeking millionaire on a dangerous dive with great white sharks, without a cage. Her nightmare that has been plaguing her since her experience, becomes reality again and they are faced with an even more carnivorous and hungry beast.

Sphere (1998)

With an unbelievable all-star cast this movie takes place 1000 meters under the surface of the ocean. Including, Samuel L Jackson, Queen Latifah, Dustin Hoffman and Sharon Stone, a team of Navy divers discover a strange object stretching over half and mile in length and are sent to find out what this mysterious structure could be. Once they reach the location, strange things start to happen as they discover a metal sphere.

An interesting piece of trivia from imdb.com is that this movie was actually filmed in a studio with specialized water tanks, none of this movie was filmed in the ocean. This incredible movie has to be one of the greatest dive movies ever.

The Frogmen (1951)

The ‘Frogmen’ was the name given to the ‘US Navy Underwater Demolition Teams’ that were sent out during World War II. Whilst out at sea, the ‘Frogmen’ would dive to great depths to remove underwater hazards.  The story is of a new captain of the Frogman who replaces a once beloved captain and has to gain the respect of his officers. The story is pretty simple but classic, and has to have a spot on our top 10 list.

Sanctum (2011)

This is a modern diving movie and is also available in 3D if you prefer a more interactive movie. This film is based on a crew of cave divers who set out on a mission to explore one of the biggest underwater cave systems in the world. However, a movie is not a movie unless there are hazards and problems in their way. This cave system happens to be the hardest one to reach. After a tropical storm rages the area of the cave system, they are sent deeper and deeper into the labyrinth. The question is; can they survive or will they be trapped forever?

This is a brilliant movie, and will leave you hanging on the edge of your seat, throughout.

Open Water (2003)

Based on a true story, the movie begins with a couple on holiday, ready to take part in a day’s diving excursion in the Caribbean. After a horrendous miss-count, the couple find themselves being left in the shark infested waters as the boat goes back to shore. This action/horror movie can suck you in and almost make you feel how these two stranded individuals feel. A great movie to hang off your seat as well as a spot of couch diving. Most certainly a contender for our top 10.

Thunderball (1965)

Of course, a James Bond film has to be close to our number one spot. James Bond, played by Sean Connery travels to the Bahamas in order to retrieve nuclear warheads that were previously stolen by Emilio Largo, who works for the Spectre Organisation. Not only is this movie great for action, it also has some amazing diving scenes that will leave us on the edge of our seats. A great movie to watch for all you dive and Bond enthusiasts out there.

The Deep (1977)

‘The Deep’ is based on a novel by Peter Benchley, and is about a couple who discover some strange and mysterious artifacts whilst diving a Wreck off the coast of Bermuda. The couple (Nick Nolte and Jaqueline Bisset), discover vials of morphine found in a wreck from a World War II shipwreck, which catches the attention of drug runners.

We also have some movie trivia, with thanks to imdb.com, did you know that the shoot for this film ran on for 153 days of which there were 8,895 dives with a total of 10,870 hours underwater and that 1,054,000 cubic feet of compressed air was consumed throughout the filming?

The Big Blue (1988)

Number 2 on our top 10 list has to be ‘The Big Blue’ or known in Europe as ‘Le Grand Bleu’. This was a big hit when it came out in 1988 and still maintains an almost cult status amongst the diving community. The story is based on two lifelong friends who have followed their dreams and become freediving rivals in the Mediterranean Sea. It is also a love story which shows what can happen to a friendship when they are battling, not only to be the champion freediver, but also the champion of love.

The Abyss (1989)

Earning its rightful place at our number 1 spot it ‘The Abyss’, which happens to be my favorite movie. Not only does this movie contain deep sea diving, it also has aliens which is always a great combination. This fantastic movie is all about a group of civilian divers who have been enlisted by the military to locate a missing nuclear submarine. As the group begin their task, they run into a number of issues and realize that they may not be alone down there.

A little bit of trivia for you, courtesy of imdb.com, whilst all you diving fans out there may love this film, the main character played by Ed Harris, was unfortunately not a fan of filming it. During the underwater filming scenes, Harris was reported to have run out of air on several occasions, as well as had a number of issues with dive equipment and with members of the cast and crew being unable to help him at times, luckily there was someone around who could help him. Due to his ‘close calls’ Harris refuses to talk about the film.
