UK Dive Magazine publishes First Digital Cover

-

In a first for the history of the BSAC’s Dive Magazine, the publication has announced that they have printed their first cover from a completely digital photograph instead of from a traditional image shot on film.

"This is our first all-digital cover, and I’m extremely proud of it. I’m especially happy that the first digital cover should be an animal as majestic as the whale shark." says Simon Rogerson, Editor of Dive Magazine.

The cover was shot by underwater photographer Douglas David Seifert, who is probably the best shark photographer in the world, and was first on the scene when this astonishing discovery was made.

To capture this image, Siefert was in the middle of a mass spawning of reef fish off the coast of Belize. Large numbers of whale sharks are drawn to this unique phenomenon and feed on the protein-rich fish eggs.

Spectacular as it may have been, shooting large pelagics like Whale Sharks in water clouded with eggs and sperm is not an easy thing to accomplish. Seifert has demonstrated that – in the right hands – the professional level Canon D60 in an underwater housing is more than up to the task at hand.

It is constantly debated that shooting digital images just isn’t ready for professional caliber work such as magazine covers. Many purests feel that it somehow detracts from the art and profession. What most readers do not realize is that many top pro’s are shooting digital without the reader being any wiser to the change in the medium.

Make no mistake – the realm of digital photography underwater is here to stay.
