Nigel Farage, one of the most high-profile proponents of the U.K.’s exit from the European Union, came under fire recently for posting a picture on social media of himself holding a shark listed as “vulnerable” by an international environmental organization.
Farage’s Twitter handle showed him pictured holding a Tope shark and a caption that read “Depressed over Brexit. Went fishing.”
The International Union for Conservation of Nature lists Tope sharks as “vulnerable.” Farage told the BBC that the shark was put back into the water while still alive.
The Blue Planet Society tweeted that it was “depressed over people catching @IUCNRedList threatened tope sharks and using them to get attention on social media.”
