Center for Oceanic Awareness, Research, and Education Executive Director Christopher Chin and associates are at DEMA 2015 in Orlando this week to help remind the dive industry that we have work to do.
Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, COARE has had great success in actually making a difference in policies that greatly benefit our oceans and ecosystems all over the country.
Featured among their displays is a small vile of plastic taken as a sample from the Gyre, the large floating plastic island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, that is bigger than Texas.
COARE’s Richard Nelson tells DeeperBlue.com:
“It’s a reminder that nothing goes away, it just goes somewhere else. I remind people that ‘That’s where the plastic bags and happy meal toys end up’ as the plastic particles swirl around in the vile.”
