The Shark Trust has announced that this year’s Easter Great Eggcase Hunt has produced outstanding results in the United Kingdom.
The hunt, which took place over the two-week Easter vacation from April 9-24, 2022, produced a bumper crop of 7,560 egg cases.
The bumper haul will be added to the existing 330,000 records. The database was started in 2003 and tries to create a comprehensive picture of shark populations found in British waters. This year, the top two finds were Thornback rays and small spotted catsharks.
Commenting on the results this year, Senior Conservation Officer Cat Gordon stated:
“We’re seriously impressed with the number of eggcases that were reported to the Great Eggcase Hunt over the two-week Easter holidays! There were so many dedicated events that took place, and it’s great to see so much of the coastline represented on the results map.”
