The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation has announced the appointment of Hans Cole as its new vice president of programs.

Reporting to the foundation’s president and CEO, Cole will join the executive team and guide the strategic alignment of the organization’s Conservation, Education and Outreach divisions.

Cole brings more than 25 years of experience in environmental philanthropy and community-driven advocacy. Before joining the foundation, he led Patagonia’s environmental initiatives, managing its global grant program and driving major brand activism campaigns. His background working in coastal communities has given him a deep understanding of how healthy public waters support biodiversity, strengthen coastal resilience and sustain local economies.

Commenting on the new appointment, National Marine Sanctuary Foundation President and CEO Joel Johnson stated:

“We’re excited Hans will lead our strategy to grow support and resources for marine sanctuaries’ programs. He has a track record of building catalytic support for conservation of public lands and waters and bringing people together to make an even greater impact.”

While Cole added:

“Having lived and worked for many years in coastal communities, I have seen firsthand the vital role public waters play in sustaining biodiversity, strengthening coastal resilience, and supporting vibrant communities and economies. I look forward to being a part of the dedicated team at the National Marine Sanctuary Foundation and its partners to help more Americans forge a deeper connection with and love for our nation’s marine sanctuaries.”
