Have diving among sharks on your bucket list? One shark advocate is circulating a petition to make sure you get that opportunity.
The U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration recently allowed the fishing of sharks to begin on January 1, 2016 in the waters around Florida, much earlier than in previous years.
That hasn’t sat well with underwater filmmaker Frazier Nivens, who recently released a video extolling the virtues of shark diving. In it, he says:
“Millions of dollars in ecotourism trickles through the economy of local, coastal communities due to shark attraction diving.”
Under the new regulation, each vessel with a permit would be allowed to catch 36 sharks per day, according to Nivens, who says in the video:
“How could this be sustainable? . . . What right do we have to wipe them off the face of the planet?”
