Vintage Dive Day is taking place today (April 11) at MarineLab Undersea Park in Key Largo, Florida.
This year’s event is hosted by the History of Diving Museum in partnership with the National Association of Underwater Instructors (NAUI).
During the event, participants can experience a host of vintage dive gear. The schedule for Vintage Dive Day includes:
- From 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (excluding noon): Try a traditional double-hose regulator.
- Noon: Trident Surface Supplied Diving, LLC will stage demonstrations of the classic U.S. Navy Mark V helmet and suit
In addition, Brass Hat Divers will present an open-bottom “Divinhood” helmet made by Miami-based Miller-Dunn Company. The helmet was used from 1915 through the 1940s for marine biology, ship maintenance, treasure hunting and underwater photography. These historic helmets helped divers explore the coral reefs of the Florida Keys and offer a rare glimpse into the roots of modern scuba diving.
Vintage Dive Day is open to divers and non-divers alike. Certified divers can take part in vintage-gear dives for US$50/~€42/~£37 per person. Non-divers are encouraged to support the event with a $10 donation.
In addition, representatives from the History of Diving Museum will be on-site to share “Dive Into Art: Stories from the Sea” programming and information about upcoming museum events.
