The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has voted against reclassifying the Great Barrier Reef as “In Danger.”
The move comes after a few weeks of tension, in which the Australian government attacked UNESCO for even thinking of such a move.
The downgrade would have proved embarrassing for Australia, which is already under substantial international pressure from climate activists and scientists claiming that the Reef is slowly but surely dying and action is needed to preserve this wonder of nature.
Although studies estimate that over two-thirds of the reef has been damaged in one way, members of the UNESCO committee agreed to give Australia more time to deal with the challenges the Barrier Reef is facing.
