British cave diving pioneer Geoff Yeadon has passed away at the age of 73.
The president of the Cave Diving Group and a leading figure in British cave diving, Yeadon is a legend of the community. He died on March 29th from a heart attack while attending a rally.
A pioneering explorer from the late 1960s onward, Yeadon played a central role in mapping and connecting some of the most complex underground systems in the UK and refining techniques that shaped modern cave-diving practice.
Raised in the Yorkshire Dales, Yeadon became synonymous with exploration beneath his local area. During his early years, he helped establish safer line-laying and navigation methods at a time when divers were still developing their own equipment and procedures.
Yeadon’s many achievements include discovering the 40-meter/131-foot Aquamole Aven in 1974. He then became the first to pass the 168-meter/551-foot sump upstream from Rowten Pot. Also after four years of effort, he and Oliver Statham completed a landmark connection between Kingsdale Master Cave and Keld Head in 1978. This was a 1,829-meter/6,000-foot traverse that set a world record. The achievement was tracked and supported by a surface team using speleophone communications and light markers.
This achievement was captured in the Yorkshire TV documentary “The Underground Eiger,” a widely seen film that inspired a generation of cave divers.
Yeadon’s contributions extended beyond Yorkshire: he was involved in long-term projects in the Matienzo cave system in northern Spain and continued to push boundaries at home, linking King Pot with Keld Head in a three-kilometer traverse in 1991. He retired from active diving in 1997 but remained engaged in the caving community.
Yeadon also made notable advances in dry spelunking, including the 1983 connection of Gaping Gill to Ingleborough Cave, a milestone following more than a century of exploration.
