Thailand has announced that coral-damaging sunscreens will be banned in all its national parks.
The ban has come into effect immediately and anyone caught flouting it will face a hefty fine. All products containing the following chemicals are banned:
- Oxybenzone.
- Octinoxate
- 4-methylbenzylidene camphor.
- Butylparaben
The chemicals have been found to cause coral reef bleaching, by preventing coral reproduction after it kills coral larvae.
People found breaking the ban face a fine of up to 100,000 baht/~US$3,008/~£2,100/~€2,537.
