A great white shark is believed to have taken the life of a spearfisher off Australia’s southwest coast.
The diver, 38-year-old Steven Mattaboni, was spearfishing off Horseshoe Reef where lifeguards had reportedly seen a four- to five-meter/13- to 16-foot great white shark.
Police Sergeant Michael Wear said:
“The victim was near a dive-boat when he was bitten on the legs. He was then taken by that boat 1km to the island.”
Attempts to revive Mattaboni were unsuccessful.
Local news outlets reported that Mattaboni was taking part in a small spearfishing tournament at the time do the incident.
Bluewater Freedivers of Western Australia, for which Mattaboni served as club secretary, said in a statement:
“We are deeply saddened to hear of the sudden passing of Steven Mattaboni, a premiership player and much-loved friend to many within our club community.
“Mattas was one of the most genuine people you could meet. He had a smile and presence that could light up a room, and he will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
“Our thoughts and love are with his family and friends during this incredibly difficult time, especially his wife Shirene and their two young daughters.”
