Mission Blue Announces New ‘Hope Spot’ In the Red Sea

-

Ocean advocacy group Mission Blue has announced a new Hope Spot located in the Red Sea.

Egypt’s Great Fringing Reefs, particularly those in the northern Red Sea, are some of the most climate tolerant in the world. An impressive 50% of Egypt’s reefs are currently protected as part of a Marine Protected Area (MPA). However, there is a push to see the Egyptian government commit to protecting the remaining reefs.

The Hope Spot is being championed by Dr. Mahmoud Hanafy of the Hurghada Environmental Protection and Conservation Association (HEPCA) and Richard Vevers of The Ocean Agency.

They hope to see the Egyptian government make the commitment during the COP27 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Sharm El Sheikh, which runs from November 6-18, 2022.
