Second Diver Involved In Serious Incident Off Vandenberg Wreck

A second scuba diver was involved in a serious incident in as many weeks in the area around the Vandenberg wreck site off the Florida Coast.
79-year-old Ellen Ruth Domb reportedly became separated from her dive buddy minutes into their dive down to the Vandenberg, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.
In addition to the Sheriff’s Office, the US Coast Guard, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and Key West Police Department were involved in the search, which was suspended on Sunday.
Less than two weeks earlier, a 50-year-old scuba instructor lost consciousness while diving the Vandenberg site and died shortly after being brought to the surface and taken to a hospital.
The USNS General Hoyt S. Vandenberg can be considered one of the top five wreck sites in the world. Sunk in 2009 as an artificial reef, she is truly huge at 522ft/160m long.
The vessel was equipped with some of the most advanced radar dishes of the age to track the space capsules for the Gemini, Mercury, and Apollo programs. The vast parabolic dishes lie at the top of the wreck, around 18m/60ft, and are the highlight of any dive on the Vandenberg.
