‘Shark Lady’ Eugenie Clark Gets Stamp Of Approval

-

The US Postal Service recently honored shark scientist and oceanographer Dr. Eugenie Clark with a “Forever” stamp.

On May 4, which would have been her 100th birthday, the first-day-of-issue event was held at the Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium.

Affectionately known as “The Shark Lady,” Clark founded what is today the Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium, dispelled myths and misconceptions about sharks through her research, and helped pave the way for women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

The stamp art features a digital collage created by artist Amanda Phingbodhipakkiya, which includes a photo by famed underwater photographer David Doubilet along with a photo of a lemon shark taken by Reinhard Dirscherl.
