The first competition day of the AIDA 2016 Freediving World Pool Championships in Turku, Finland concluded on Monday with 4 new National Records in the Static (STA) competition qualifiers.

Competition Organizer Mikko Anttonen had this to say to DeeperBlue.com:
“The atmosphere at the Impivaara pool was calm and relaxed which shows also in the results. Only a handful of disqualifications were issued and the time to A-finals in the men’s category was close to 8 minutes and in the women’s category over six minutes! Tomorrow we continue with the dynamic no-fins qualifications. Don’t forget to tune in for the DNF qualifications live from the Impivaara pool.”
Spectators at the venue as well as watching via the online live stream saw some strong performances today, especially the new National Records from:
- Beatrice Del Negro (France) – 7min 32sec
- Elisabeth Skeparnia (Greece) – 5min 41sec
- Timo Kinnunen (Finland) – 8min 13sec
- Dimitrii Voloshin (
MacedoniaMoldova) – 6min 30sec
Team GB competitor Georgina Miller took time to speak to DeeperBlue.com after her 6min 18sec static, that qualified her for the A-Finals later in the competition, and had this to say:
“it was just lovely, so quiet and calm. I am really enjoying the competition atmosphere and smooth organization”
Tuesday sees the Dynamic No-Fins (DNF) qualifiers kick off to see who moves to the DNF Finals.
