Legislation Proposed To Create Artificial Reefs From Retired Naval Vessels

-

A bill has been reintroduced to the US Congress to encourage using retired naval vessels as artificial reefs.

The bill, called the “Reusing Equipment for Environmental Fortification Act,” or “REEF Act,” was brought forward by Representatives Ed Case (D-HI) and María Elvira Salazar (R-FL). The Senate companion bill was introduced by Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL).

The legislation will require the US secretary of the Navy to evaluate the viability as an artificial reef of any Navy vessels approaching retirement and then inform Congress about its suitability.

The Diving Equipment and Marketing Association strongly supports the bill and is urging its members to support it by writing to their senators and representatives to urge them to support the passage of the legislation.
