We Now Know Who Will Run The Ocean Energy Safety Institute

-

The US Departments of Energy and Interior have announced a collaboration with Texas A&M University to support the operation of the Ocean Energy Safety Institute (OESI).

Over the next five years and with a US$40 million (~32.9 Euro) budget, the Texas A&M Engineering Experiment Station will manage the OESI and provide support with various activities, including oil spill prevention and blowout containment.

Commenting on the partnership Dr. Jennifer Wilcox, the DOE Acting Assistant Secretary of Fossil Energy, stated:

“We are excited about this collaboration with the Department of the Interior and the opportunity this will provide for cooperative research between academia, government, and industry. This effort will work to both mitigate offshore environmental risks by improving technologies to prevent oil spills while developing new offshore renewable energy solutions.”

While Laura Daniel-Davis, the US Department of the Interior’s Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Land and Minerals Management, added:

“The Ocean Energy Safety Institute is an important example of how cooperative efforts between academia, government, industry, and other non-governmental organizations can be used to improve both worker safety and environmental sustainability. The OESI will support critical improvements for all offshore energy activities, including renewable and traditional energy, as well as support new offshore energy technology development.”
