PADI Instructor Creates Lionfish Hunter Distinctive Specialty

PADI Master Instructor Chris Willey has created a “Lionfish Hunter Distinctive Specialty.”

The move was in response to him hearing about unsafe and risky Lionfish dives, so he decided to create a course to offer formal training.

The course has been on offer since 2017, and Willey has taught over 35 students so far. Approved by the Roatan Marine Park, the two-dive course teaches students buoyancy techniques as well as familiarizing them with the Hawaiian sling to hunt Lionfish. The course also covers some of the basics of first aid for marine life injuries.

The specialty will count towards the Master Scuba Diver rating, and those who complete the course on Roatan will receive a Marine Park bracelet, spear and Bay Islands Lionfish License.
