The 2021 Great Shark Race overseen by the Guy Harvey Research Institute (GHRI) is now underway.
The race will run from now through July 14th, 2021 and features two shark species known for their long migrations, the Whale Shark and the Shortfin Mako.
The fun event is aimed at increasing our knowledge of both species. While we know they are great travelers, less is known about the factors that drive migration, differences between the sexes, and much more.
GHRI sponsored fin-mounted SPOT satellite tags, allowing scientists to follow the sharks on their migration in virtually-real-time. The individual animal who covers the longest distance will be declared this year’s shark race winner.
