Yap Holds World Tuna Day Celebrations

-

YAP held celebrations to commemorate World Tuna Day on July 5-6, 2024.

The day has been held internationally since 2017 and aims to bring stakeholders together to protect tuna schools globally. The aim of the day is to conserve and create a sustainable fishing model for these economically important species.

Highlights of the events in Yap included a fishing derby, raft and boat races as well as a tuna filling and cooking competition.

The theme of this year’s celebrations in the Federated States of Micronesia was “Our Tuna, Our Legacy,” and it aimed to show the shared responsibility amongst the four states to act as good shepherds for the species.
