The body of a female diver has been recovered from a wreck in Argentina.
The 23-year-old Argentine diver, SofÃa Devries, went missing during a training dive at the artificial reef wreck Hu Shun Yu 809 off Puerto Madryn in Golfo Nuevo on February 16, 2026. Naval teams recovered her body close to the wreck on February 18 at about 25 meters/80ft depth.
Devries was part of a four-person group taking an advanced training dive on or near the 70-meter/230-foot vessel sunk in 2017 to create the Parque Submarino Hu Shun Yu 809, a site commonly used for deeper recreational and certification dives.
The incident resulted in several other injuries, with local hospital reports indicating that three other divers were treated or observed, with two receiving hyperbaric therapy.
Prosecutors in Chubut have opened a judicial inquiry to determine whether procedural lapses, equipment failure, environmental conditions or instructor supervision contributed to the fatality.
However, early official communications suggested Devries may have been unable to ascend unassisted for reasons not yet established; a post-mortem and further forensic work were pending.
